S&P/TSX composite edges lower in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index edged lower in late-morning trading, led lower by losses in the utility and telecommunications sectors, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 8.97 points at 18,472.01.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 158.91 points at 29,431.50. The S&P 500 index was down 11.07 points at 3,682.16, while the Nasdaq composite was up 43.14 points at 10,911.07.

The Canadian dollar traded for 73.09 cents US compared with 73.69 cents US on Friday.

The November crude contract was up 74 cents at US$79.48 per barrel and the November natural gas contract was down 11 cents at US$6.88 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was down US$4.70 at US$1,650.90 an ounce and the December copper contract was down a penny at US$3.33 a pound.
