S&P/TSX composite up nearly 150 points in late-morning trading, U.S. stocks also rise

TORONTO — Strength in the base metal, financial and industrial sectors helped Canada’s main stock index gain nearly 150 points in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets also climbed higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 147.36 points at 19,388.80.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 189.44 points at 31,770.72. The S&P 500 index was up 28.57 points at 4,008.44, while the Nasdaq composite was up 103.03 points at 11,894.93.

The Canadian dollar traded for 76.24 cents US compared with 75.96 cents US on Wednesday.

The October crude contract was up US$1.51 at US$83.45 per barrel and the October natural gas contract was up 16 cents at US$8.00 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was down US$8.50 at US$1,719.30 an ounce and the December copper contract was up seven cents at US$3.50 a pound.
